Munchausen’s Museum

Baron Munchausen is a typical representative of landed classes of 18th century with hunting and war as the main occupation. Hunting trophies, hunting horns, daggers, weapons, and Munchausen’s wax figure with a string of ducks – these are only some of the things you’ll find at the museum of Munchausen.
In Latvia the only collection of wax figures is being exhibited on the first floor of Munchausen’s museum. Many former and current celebrities have found their shelter there. Everyone can take a picture with Maestro Raimonds Pauls or basketball star Uljana Semjonova and other famous people.

THE MUNCHAUSEN’S FOREST TRAIL is the longest footbridge of aspen plank in Europe. It goes through Vidzeme wetland forest. The total length of both its passages is 5.3 km. The longest passage reaches the sea, where one can sunbathe in white sand of Vidzeme beach and swim in the sea.

The territory of the Duntes Manor House is spacious, nice and clean. There are several picnic places with tables, benches, fire places and grilling equipment. One of the places is located at the entrance to the forest trail, but the other – next to the recreation ship. After visiting the museum, feel free to enjoy the scenic route of our forest trails, where one can enjoy different activities and reach the beach. We also offer picnic spots where you can enjoy grilling by the fire with family and friends.

At the beginning of 1990-ties, the specialists of the museum in cooperation with professor Gunārs Pakalns prepared a small exhibition about the man from the same district Hieronymus Karl Friedrich von Munchausen in Dunte where Limbazi Folk Museum was situated. The exhibition became really popular. In 1999, the museum was taken over by Liepupe parish.

Unfortunately, the building was destroyed by the fire on March 1, 2001. After the fire, the parish of Liepupe opened a temporary exhibition at Liepupe parish house.

In 2004, the museum was taken over by new owners – LLC “Minhauzena pasaule” (“Munchausen’s World”). A new exhibition – “Travelling in time together with Munchausen”- was open in Liepupe parish house already on April 1, 2004. In autumn of the same year, a fundament for a new building of the Munchausen’s museum was built.

The opening ceremony of the new museum building took place on May 32, 2005. Thus, the museum celebrates its birthday every year on May 32 with a single candle and several cakes (as many cakes as the museum’s age!)

The owners of the unique collection of ancient bicycles in Latvia are Guntis and Janis Seregins. Collection of bicycles dates back to the 1977. The collection consists of technically most interesting samples of bicycle development history found in Latvia. There is one of the first Latvian made highwheel bicycle produced in 1886, cycle "Coventry" produced in England with the first pneumatic tyres, as well as cycle "Safety" manufactured in the first bicycle factory of A. Leitners in Latvia in 1888. A peculiar sample of the collection is a wooden bicycle produced in a VEF workshop of sports airplanes. Karlis Irbitis, well known at that time Latvian aero-constructor, constructed it using materials of airplane building. Apart from bicycles there are many different things related to cycles, cycling, societies and bicycle production.

White Dune of Saulkrasti and Incupe River

The White Dune
The White Dune formed as the wind drove beach sand over the clay silt of Baltic Ice Lake. Its white 18 meters high sand outcrop once helped local fishermen find their way home. The dune got its name from its white, hardened layers of sand which look like sandstone.

Landscaping has been conducted in the area, and the slopes of the dune have been reinforced. Although the dune is covered by a pine tree forest, its steep slope, which faces the sea, is still visible.

On your way to the White Dune you will see linden trees named after Russian Empress Catherine II. Legend has it that Catherine II planted the trees while vacationing at Pabazi seaside.

Balta Kapa Saulkrasti - White Dune of Saulkrasti

Its basis is formed of very fine water-firmed sand and silt which had accumulated during the earliest period of formation of the Baltic Sea (during the existence of the Baltic Ice Lake 10-13 thousand years ago), and the upper part of the slope is formed by the layer of the much younger windblown sand.

You may also see seashores that are more resistant to the wind and wave action, and expose different rock and sediment layers in other places on the Latvian coast.

Here, on the White Dune, the eternal changeability and dynamism of nature may be observed. Just look how the Incupe River bends today over there, at the bottom; or come here during stormy weather!

A special focus in the story about the White Dune is put on the Incupe River since it persistently tries to keep the White Dune white by its flow. The mouth of the Incupe River shifts, moves closer to the White Dune creating broad lowering of the beach. Eventually, the slope of the White Dune is eroded both by the river and storm waves from the Gulf of Riga.

Humans are to blame for this as well. The sand on the slope is an unstable base. The White Dune is fragile: it crumbles if we walk on it. We urge you not to climb over the rails and not to allow other people to do it.
